Reading Office 365 e-mail in Thunderbird

These instructions detail how to use Thunderbird to read Office 365 e-mails. The instructions are written for Thunderbird version 78.5.0.

When you order an Office 365 mailbox, you get access to e-mail and a calendar. If you wish to use the calendar, please see the separate Evolution instructions.

  Settings for using Office 365 e-mail

Open Thunderbird. The installation wizard launches.

  • The name is pre-filled but you can edit it as you wish. Fill the other fields according to the image:
  • Provide your e-mail address in the format firstname.lastname@helsinki.fi
  • Enter your password
  • The box Remember password is chosen by default.
  • Click Continue.

What comes next depends on whether you are in the university’s network or not.

  • If you are in the university’s network some of the information is pre-filled (1). If you are not in the university’s network you have to fill in all of the information yourself.
  • Click Configure manually (2).
  • Make sure that the settings match the picture (1).
  •  INCOMING: 
    • Protocol = IMAP
    • Server = outlook.office365.com
    • Port = 993
    • SSL = SSL/TLS
    • Authentication = Normal password
    • Username = your own username in the format username@ad.helsinki.fi
  • OUTGOING 
    • Protocol = SMTP
    • Server = smtp.helsinki.fi
    • Port = 587
    • SSL = STARTTLS
    • Authentication = Normal password
    • Username = your own username in the format username@ad.helsinki.fi
  • Click Done (2).
  • If you want to use Thunderbird as the default program for reading e-mail, uncheck Always perform this check when starting Thunderbird and check Set as Default.
  • The installation is completed. Thunderbird starts. Starting might take a while if you have a lot of messages. You can follow the progress in the bottom of the window.
  • Thunderbird is ready to be used.
