Thunderbird – Deployment and settings

These instructions are intended for computers covered by the University’s centralised administration (that includes Cubbli) and it is assumed that you have logged in to the internal network (through the VPN, if necessary). With these instructions, you can use Thunderbird to read the University’s Office 365 e-mail. You can also use these instructions to install the program on your home computer: the layout may be slightly different but the functions are mostly the same..

If you do not have Thunderbird on your computer, you can install it from Software Center (instructions).

    Tilin lisääminen

    Fill in your name and e-mail address in the form username@ad.helsinki.fi (e.g. rkeskiva@ad.helsinki.fi). Click Configure manually.

    1. Fill in the following information:

    • Incoming
      • Server: outlook.office365.com
      • Port: 993
      • SSL: SSL/TLS
      • Username: username in the form username@ad.helsinki.fi (e.g. rkeskiva@ad.helsinki.fi)
    • Outgoing
      • Server: smtp.office365.com
      • Port: 587
        SSL: STARTTLS
      • Username: username in the form username@ad.helsinki.fi (e.g. rkeskiva@ad.helsinki.fi)

    2. Click Re-test

    3. In the Authentication menu, select OAuth2.

    4. Click Done and you can log in to your e-mail for the first time.

    If you have not used Thunderbird before

    Launch Thunderbird. When launched for the first time, Thunderbird asks for some information. Fill in at least your name and e-mail address in the form username@ad.helsinki.fi (e.g. rkeskiva@ad.helsinki.fi). You can also enter your password already at this stage (1). By selecting Remember password (2), you can ensure that the password is remembered by the program.

    • Continue by clicking Configure manually (3).

    Fill in the information as shown in the picture (1).

    • Incoming
      • Server: outlook.office365.com
      • Port: 993
      • SSL: SSL/TLS
      • Username: username in the form username@ad.helsinki.fi (e.g. rkeskiva@ad.helsinki.fi)
    • Outgoing
      • Server: smtp.office365.com
      • Port: 587
      • SSL: STARTTLS
      • Username: username in the form username@ad.helsinki.fi (e.g. rkeskiva@ad.helsinki.fi)
    • Then click Re-test (2).
    • In the Authentication menu, select OAuth2.

      NOTE! You cannot see this option if you have not clicked Re-test at the previous stage..

    • Change the authentication method in both columns (1). When the settings are in order, click Done (2).
    • In the Username section, enter your username in the form username@ad.helsinki.fi (e.g. rkeskiva@ad.helsinki.fi) and in the Password section, enter your password..
    • NOTE! If you have not enabled MFA, the following step will be omitted.
      Next, you will be directed to MFA. The method used may be different from the one shown in the picture, depending on your settings (see the general MFA instructions).
    • Thunderbird opens.

    If you have used Thunderbird before

    • If you already have a Thunderbird account, open Thunderbird. Click Account Settings or the hamburger menu icon > New > Existing Mail Account
    • If necessary, change the setting under Server Settings (1) and Outgoing Server (2) as described above.

     

    Using shared mailboxes in Thunderbird

    A shared mailbox is configured as a personal account with the same settings as the personal mailbox, but:

    • In Thunderbird settings, give the username in the form:
      <shared-mailbox>@ad.helsinki.fi
    • In the browser window, use your username during login:
      username@ad.helsinki.fi
