Skype for Business - logging in with different devices

Skype for Business is part of the Microsoft Office 365 service. It includes status information, instant messaging, online meetings, audio calls and video calls. Skype can be used both at your desk and when mobile. There are separate applications available for various mobile devices (such as tablet devices and phones, you can find more information on your device’s application store).

Quick help

University Windows computers:

  • When the log-in window opens, enter your username in the form username@ad.helsinki.fi and your password.

Home computer; Windows and Mac:

  • The following are required for log-in:
    • Sign-in address, i.e. e-mail address, in the format firstname.lastname@helsinki.fi.
    • User name in the format username@ad.helsinki.fi
    • Password 

Note that when logging in to a home computer, only the fields Log-in address and Password may be visible. Enter information in them and try log-in once. Close the notification about failed log-in. After this, the screen will show the Log-in address, User name and Password fields or Advanced settings. Now you can enter your user name in the required field.

Mobile devices

  • The following are required for log-in:
    • The log-in address, i.e. e-mail address, in the format firstname.lastname@helsinki.fi
    • Password
    • Open the Advanced settings menu > User Name >> enter in the format username@helsinki.fi (e.g.rkeskiva@ad.helsinki.fi)

Windows

Open the program and enter your e-mail address as your log-in address. In addition, enter your password in the requested field. Click Log in.

The application notifies that log-in failed. Click OK.

 
 
The log-in window opens again, but now it has one additional field: User name. Enter in the field your Office 365 user name in the format username@ad.helsinki.fi (e.g. rkeskiva@ad.helsinki.fi). Finally, click Log in.

 Now you should be able to log in. If not, check your password and network connection.

Mac

  • Use the Office 365 user name "username@ad.helsinki.fi" (e.g.rkeskiva@ad.helsinki.fi) as your user ID. Click Continue

  • Password field appear in the log-in window. Write your University password.
  • Click Sign in

Now you should be able to log in. If not, check your password and network connection.

iOS devices

  • Install Skype for Business from AppStore.
  • Open the installed application, and the log-in window will appear. Enter your e-mail address in the Log-in address field and password in the designated field.
  • Click Show advanced settings to open it.

  • Enter in the User name field your Office 365 user name in the format username@ad.helsinki.fi (e.g. rkeskiva@ad.helsinki.fi).
    • Also check that Server identification is on.

  • Now you can click the Log-in button at the bottom of the page.
  • Next, the application asks your telephone number. Enter the number to continue.
  • You should now be able to log in. If not, check network connections or see Troubleshooting.

Android

The instructions have been written for Android 5.0.2 Samsung Galaxy Tab, but they can also be applied to other versions and devices. The settings are the same, though things can be asked slightly differently, depending on version and language.

  • Install the Skype for Business for Android application from the Play Store.
  • Open the installed application, and the log-in window will appear. First enter your e-mail address in the requested field in the format firstname.surname@helsinki.fi and enter your password in the requested field.

  • Next, click Advanced settings and enter your Office 365 user name in the User Name field, i.e. username@ad.helsinki.fi (e.g. rkeskiva@ad.helsinki.fi).
  • Also check that automatic server identification is on.

  • Now you can click the Log in button (in this case the arrow right icon).
  • Next, the application asks your telephone number. Enter the number to continue.
  • If log-in fails, check the network connection or see Troubleshooting.

Troubleshooting

  • If Skype has been working normally but now log-in fails > Delete my sign-in info and start by logging in again.
  • You may not be able to log in from all networks. If there are problems with log-in, try switching over to a mobile data connection, for example, for the log-in.
