The university’s VPN service is implemented using the OpenVPN software. Use the latest software version during installation (do not try to install beta versions).
Download the OpenVPN software at: https://openvpn.net/community-downloads/
Select the latest release, do not try to install beta versions.
Download the configuration files from the Download Centre
Hint: Search for VPN and select your operating system under Tags to see the required downloads
- HY-VPN (hy.ovpn)
- HY-VPN TUN (hy-tun.ovpn)
Also read the instructions for using the Download Centre.
Note: The university’s VPN service is designed in such a way that the easiest and surest way to install the OpenVPN software is to accept the default settings offered by the installation software. If you need help using the software later, the assumption is that you have installed the software installation software using the default settings.
To start installation, click the installation file in the Downloads folder.
When the installation software starts, click Next.
Read and accept the license terms.
Click I Agree to accept the terms.
The default settings are selected in the installation software. You do not need to change these.
You do not need to change the installation folder either.
When the installation is complete, click Finish. Now, move to the installation of the configuration.
After installation, you still need to install the configuration files before using the software.
Start the OpenVPN software from the Start menu by choosing OpenVPN > OpenVPN-gui.
When the OpenVPN software has started, you can upload the configuration files you downloaded from the Download Centre as follows:
- Click the OpenVPN icon in the menu at the bottom. In the menu that opens, choose Import file...
Select the configuration file you got from the Download Centre, hy-tun.ovpn and hy.ovpn (NB! you need to import files separately). These files can be found in the Downloads folder if you used the default settings. Choose the file and click Open.
When the installation is complete, the software gives a notification of successful action.
After importing configuration files, the program should look like this:
To open the software, right-click the OpenVPN icon in the menu at the bottom and choose Connect.
The software then asks for your username and password (use the university username in the basic format, such as rkeskiva). The user information is sent to the university server in an encrypted format.
After a successful login, the OpenVPN icon in the status bar turns green. Hold the mouse over the icon to see a pop-up window with information about the connection.
To end the VPN connection, choose Disconnect in the OpenVPN start menu.
