OpenVPN capacity has been increased to support remote working

The University of Helsinki IT Center has increased the capacity of the OpenVPN service by adding a new "hy-tun" connection. The new connection is automatically available for university maintained Windows 10 computers starting 18 March 2020.

Access OpenVPN from the Windows taskbar notification area by clicking the secondary mouse button.

Downloading the installation files

The university’s VPN service is implemented using the OpenVPN software. Use the latest software version during installation.

Download the OpenVPN software at: https://openvpn.net/community-downloads/
Choose the correct installation file on the page. For home computers, this is usually Windows 10 Installer.

In addition to the software installation file, you need two configuration files (called hy.ovpn and hy-tun.ovpn), which contain the settings needed to start using the university’s VPN service.

Download the configuration files from the Download Centre:

  • hy-tun.ovpn    (file path: Programs > HY-VPN)
  • hy.ovpn   (file path: Programs > HY-VPN > Windows)

Also read the instructions for using the Download Centre.

Installation of the software

Note: The university’s VPN service is designed in such a way that the easiest and surest way to install the OpenVPN software is to accept the default settings offered by the installation software. If you need help using the software later, the assumption is that you have installed the software installation software using the default settings.

To start installation, click the installation file in the Downloads folder.
