The new eduVPN service became available at the University in June 2025. EduVPN is a secure and fast VPN service which will replace OpenVPN. OpenVPN will be discontinued at the University on 29 October 2025. OpenVPN will be discontinued as a VPN connection option, but will remain in use in individual University network services and systems where required due to technical requirements.
Multifactor authentication was introduced for University eduVPN connections starting from service launch. OpenVPN connections uh-vpn-allroute and uh-vpn-helsinkifi-only will be discontinued on 29 October 2025. We will release more information on the discontinuation of OpenVPN connections during autumn 2025.
- EduVPN is a modern and secure VPN connection which is up to 3.5–4 times faster than OpenVPN connections. EduVPN allows you to use University services safely and quickly on your work or home computer and from outside the University network.
- Multi-factor authentication to the eduVPN service takes place in connection with your single sign-on (SSO) in the same way as in other University services.
Important information about eduVPN and the discontinuation of OpenVPN
- Start using eduVPN now, as OpenVPN will be discontinued soon. See IT Helpdesk instructions on how to use eduVPN. As OpenVPN is required for some University services due to technical requirements, it will remain available for these services. You will not, however, see OpenVPN as a connection option in your taskbar after 29 October 2025.
- The eduVPN launch does not affect the AoVPN (Always on VPN) connection option available for University staff Windows computers. Start using AoVPN easily on your University Windows computer with IT Helpdesk instructions
