The IT Centre will phase out University Mac computers with Intel processors by 31 January 2027. These devices will be retired because Apple’s support for them is ending, and they will no longer receive important security updates.
If you are using an older University Mac with an Intel processor, you will see a notice on the device screen after startup during summer and autumn 2026. We will also send you an email with instructions.
Mac computers with Intel processors include device models manufactured in 2020 or earlier. You can check whether you are using a Mac model with an Intel processor as follows:
- Open the Apple menu on your Mac and select About This Mac.
- In the window that opens, check whether an Intel processor is shown under Processor (for example, 2.3 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9).
If you are using a University Mac with an Intel processor, please do the following:
- Back up any important files stored locally on the device, for example to an external hard drive, your Z: home directory, or another network drive. See the IT Helpdesk instructions on saving and sharing
- Send the Mac computer being decommissioned to IT recycling via the university’s internal mail service, or if necessary, ask the IT Centre’s local support to collect the old device. See the device return instructions in the IT recycling guidelines. The hard drives of computers delivered to the recycling service will be securely wiped.
- If you are still actively using the Mac for work and need a replacement, submit a device procurement request in accordance with the computer procurement instructions
