Windows 11 upgrades will be available in summer 2025 – install the upgrade at a convenient time

The Windows 11 operating system will be installed on all compatible University staff Windows 10 computers during the summer and autumn of 2025. Microsoft ends Windows 10 support in October 2025.

  • Windows 11 upgrades will become gradually available for University staff Windows 10 computers via the Software Center during June and July 2025.
  • Mandatory, scheduled Windows 11 upgrades will begin in late summer/early autumn. You will be notified of the scheduled Windows 11 upgrade on your computer, and you can postpone the installation until the due date stated in the notification.
  • Windows 11 upgrades will be installed on University Windows desktop computers purchased in 2020 or later and on University Windows laptops purchased in 2021 or later. NB! If you have a University Windows computer older than mentioned above, see our previous bulletin for instructions on submitting a new work computer device purchase request and decommissioning your old device.

Follow these instructions to install the Windows 11 upgrade on your University Windows work computer

Please note that you are responsible for your own files. If you have important files on your work computer’s hard drive, you should create backups and transfer the files to a safe location, such as your Z home directory. See the IT Helpdesk instructions on saving and sharing information at the University.

  • Install the Windows 11 upgrade on your University work computer at a convenient time for you when the upgrade is available in the Software Center. NB! Keep your computer connected to a power source and the Internet throughout the upgrade process.
  • The installation takes roughly 70–90 minutes, so please install the upgrade at a suitable time for you. You can postpone the upgrade installation to a convenient time e.g. at the end of the workday. The upgrade will be displayed in the Software Center as Windows 11 23H2 In-Place Upgrade.
  • During the upgrade process, different views will be displayed on your screen and the screen may black out for a long period of time. Please wait patiently until the upgrade has been completed and you see the Windows 11 login window on your screen.
  • After the upgrade, log in to your computer with your University username.
