Windows 11 operating system upgrades will become mandatory in September 2025. The upgrade will be installed by 30 September 2025 on all University staff Windows 10 computers eligible for the upgrade. Microsoft will end Windows 10 support in October 2025.
Mandatory, scheduled Windows 11 upgrades for University Windows 10 computers will begin on 20 August 2025. You will receive a Windows 11 upgrade notification on your computer when it is available for installation. Install the upgrade as soon as possible.
More than 500 University Windows 10 computers have already been upgraded to Windows 11 –thank you for upgrading!
NB! Windows 11 upgrades will only be installed on University Windows 10 desktop computers purchased in 2020 or later and on the University Windows 10 laptops purchased in 2021 or later.
If you need to replace your end-of-life device, submit a device purchase request immediately! The University's contract supplier currently estimates that factory deliveries for new Windows 11 devices will take approximately 5–7 weeks.

How to install the Windows 11 upgrade on your University Windows work computer
Please note that you are responsible for your own files. If you have important files on your work computer’s hard drive, you should make backups and transfer the files to a safe location, such as your home directory (Z:). See the IT Helpdesk instructions on saving and sharing files at the University.
- Install the Windows 11 upgrade on your University work computer at a suitable time after receiving the upgrade notification on your computer. You can also install the upgrade from the Software Centre. NB! Please keep your computer connected to a power source and the Internet throughout the upgrade process.
- The installation takes roughly 70–90 minutes, so please install the upgrade at a time that suits you. You can also postpone the installation to a suitable time, such as the end of your workday. The upgrade will also show in the Software Centre as Windows 11 23H2 In-Place Upgrade.
- You will see different views displayed on your screen throughout the upgrade process. Your screen may also black out for several minutes. Please wait patiently until the upgrade has been completed and you see the Windows 11 login window on your screen.
- Once the upgrade has been installed, log in to your computer with your University username and password.
