Windows 7 computers covered by the university’s central administration will be upgraded to Windows 10 during 2019. The upgrade process began in June and goes on until the end of the year.

The upgrade process takes place because Microsoft’s support for Windows 7 ends in January 2020. This means that no security updates will be available for Windows 7 as of January. Therefore, as of 13 January 2020, the IT Center will block Windows 7 computers from the university network – this restriction applies to personal Windows 7 laptops as well!

If you have a Windows 7 computer:

  • Your unit will decide which of the following courses of action will be taken: you will be given a new computer; the operating system of your computer will be upgraded to Windows 10; your computer will be discarded (for example, if you have multiple computers at your disposal). The person responsible for equipment purchases at your unit will tell you what to do.
  • If your computer is to be upgraded, you will receive a notification via the HY menu. Initiate the upgrade yourself at the end of your workday according to these Helpdesk instructions.
  • You will see an upgrade deadline notification on your computer prompting you to upgrade by a specific date. You can postpone the upgrade until the end of the week during which you received the notification. After this your computer will be upgraded automatically.
  • If your computer is to be replaced, wait for instructions from your unit.
