The IT Center is renewing its services for students. Student access control will change, and the Laptop Lender service will be expanded to all campuses during 2025.

Evening and weekend student access control (night access keys) to change in 2025

The night access key service will be replaced with a new system, as the old student access control system has reached the end of its lifecycle.  The service has also required administrative resources because separate deposit fees have been used for the keys. In connection with the change, the service responsibility will be transferred from the IT Center to the facility services.

  • The new student access control system will be implemented in February–March 2025. Students will receive one access control identifier free of charge. The system is the same as the one in general use for staff access control.
  • The old night access key system will be maintained until the new system has been implemented. The return of key deposits will begin as soon as possible.

Further information about the services

The Computer for Studying service renews IT services for students

One of the most popular and long-lived services of the IT Center has been the computer facilities service. However, in its current form, the service does not support the multi-purpose use of the premises, and it is not possible to provide a uniform service across the University. For this reason, the IT Center has decided to discontinue the service.

The Computer for Studying service renews IT services for students. The purpose of the change is to improve the services and ensure that service can be provided in a uniform quality across different campuses. The change will also better support the multi-purpose use of the University’s premises.

Different forms of the Computer for Studying service

IT workstations for students

  • Traditional IT workstation: computer and monitor (1–2 pcs)
  • Docking station: docking monitor for connecting either your own computer or a loan laptop.
  • Each workstation is equipped with a keyboard and mouse.

Laptop Lender laptops for students

  • A laptop computer that can be borrowed from the Laptop Lender service and can be used at the University’s premises. The Laptop Lender service has been piloted at University premises for four years – the Laptop Lender used in the pilot is currently available at the Infocentre lobby at Viikki Campus. Currently, Laptop Lender can be found in the lobby of the Viikki Info Centre. See our previous bulletin on Laptop Lender.
  • Six new Laptop Lenders will be opened in February–March 2025, so that they are available on all campuses. We will provide more detailed information on the introduction of the Laptop Lenders in early 2025.

AVD virtual desktop for students

Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) is a virtual desktop for students.

General information about IT workstations and loan laptops

In general, IT workstations and Laptop Lender laptops are available in the vicinity of the campus libraries. IT workstations can be located in the University’s shared premises or in the units’ own premises as needed. A condition for the premises is that all students can use them and that the premises should have space for at least six (6) workstations.

  • Laptop Lender laptops will be introduced at all campuses in February–March 2025.
  • New docking stations will be introduced at the campuses during this year and next year.
  • The IT Center ensures that students will continue have access to a sufficient number of computers and workstations. The IT Center measures the utilisation rates of the service and, if necessary, will make changes to the placement of the service and the number of devices.
  • The planned total number of workstations and loan laptops currently stands at 200.
