Service description

A firewall makes it possible to isolate a secure network from the rest of the data network for use by research laboratories, for example. If necessary, access to network devices protected by the firewall from areas outside the firewall can be arranged by means of VPN, SSH or RDP connections, for example. Also outgoing traffic may be restricted.

All firewalls covered by the service are connected to the centralised administration system which takes care of, for example, back-up copying and monitoring. Firewall access lists are subject to centralised administration with the on-site support teams on campuses.

How to take the service into use

Contact the on-site IT support of your campus to order the service. Before implementation, the operation of the firewall is specified in more detail in cooperation with the client. Also experts of the data communications team are usually consulted during the implementation phase.

Responsibilities

The IT Center is responsible for the administration of the firewall device. Other responsibilities and restrictions of the service are agreed on a case-by-case basis.

The user must follow the terms of use of the university’s information systems. The terms of use can be found at https://www.helsinki.fi/en/it/terms-of-use-and-privacy-policy-of-it-services.

User support

User support is available from Helpdesk (https://helpdesk.it.helsinki.fi/en).

The basic price includes the possibility to have two simultaneous remote connections (VPN). Implementation and costs of larger network or networks transmitting particularly large amounts of data are subject to a separate agreement.

The client acquires any hardware needed for larger networks itself with the help of the data communications team. Administration fees of major hardware or other licence fees may be charged from the users.
