The client application Tunnelblick, used to establish OpenVPN connections on Mac computers, will be centrally removed from all University Mac devices in the afternoon of 2 April 2026. The removal is due to a security vulnerability detected in the Tunnelblick application.
- This change does not affect you if you do not use a Tunnelblick connection (OpenVPN) on your Mac. EduVPN replaced OpenVPN connections at the university in 2025, but OpenVPN remained in use for certain systems and use cases where it was needed for technical reasons. See IT-Helpdesk’s eduVPN instructions.
- The Tunnelblick client application will be removed from your device centrally after 2 April 2026, the next time you start your computer and the removal process reaches your Mac.
Note! We will send a targeted email with instructions to university staff known to be using the Tunnelblick client application today, 2 April 2026.
I use Tunnelblick on my Mac – what do I need to do?
- If you still need OpenVPN connectivity on your Mac, you must download the Tunnelblick client application again from the Managed Software Center after the centralized removal.
- You may also need to download new configuration files for OpenVPN to ensure the connection works through Tunnelblick. In that case, please contact the IT Helpdesk: helpdesk@helsinki.fi
