The University of Helsinki IT Center will remove Java 8 installations from the University's centrally managed Windows computers in April 2019 due to ensure IT security. Java 8 will be removed because it is obsolete and because this has resulted in the security patches becoming subject to costs (public updates will be discontinued). Java 8 use at the University is also very low.

  • The removal of Java 8 may cause some systems that utilize older technologies to stop working (applets, plugins etc.)
  • Java 8 pre-installations bundled with software will note be removed.
  • You can install OpenJDK from the University Software Center. Please note that OpenJDK does not support all the older Java 8 technologies.
  • If you need to continue using Java 8, you may have to purchase a paid license from Oracle.
