New Unitube release on 31 January 2020 – Unitube service break late January

Updated

As we announced earlier, the IT Center is rebuilding the Unitube video service. Due to technical challenges, the release date for the new Unitube upload service has been delayed until the end of January 2020.

During 2019, we have been developing a new and improved Unitube interface for uploading and managing videos. Furthermore, we have been preparing a wide-scale update of the background services needed for storing and sharing Unitube videos.

We will now begin the migration process of all videos from the old Unitube upload service to the new one. This process will begin with the most recent videos, and will proceed toward the older ones. The migration process is estimated to continue until early February, which means that all of the older videos might not be available upon release. We will update you on the current phase of the migration process with the release of the new Unitube upload service.

Old Unitube upload service remains functional for the time being – make changes to your videos after the update!

  • The Unitube upload service will continue to serve university users in the old Emerita Flamma until release.
  • During the migration phase, you can upload videos to the current upload service, but these videos will be among the last to be migrated to the new version, so expect a delay. If you make any changes to the names or descriptions of current videos or video series, these changes may not be transferred to the new version of the Unitube upload service.
  • Unitube will continue to operate as such until the last week of January 2020. However, the update forces a major service break to the whole Unitube service before the release of the new Unitube upload service. This break may last up to several days, and no videos may be viewed or uploaded during that period. We will inform you on the time and duration of the break during early January.

Old Moodle videos will remain viewable

  • Contrary to the information we released earlier, no action is required on your part if you currently own Unitube videos limited to be viewed within Moodle courses. Our current tests indicate that all current Moodle video links will remain functional after the update, and no user action is required.

We are sorry for any inconvenience caused by the update process! If you have any inquiries regarding the Unitube upload service, please send us an e-mail at unitube-lataamo@helsinki.fi
