Windows 11 will be installed on all University staff Windows 10 computers that support the upgrade during the spring and summer 2025. Microsoft will end Windows 10 support in October 2025.

  • Windows 11 upgrades will be installed on University Windows desktop computers purchased in 2020 or later and on the University Windows laptops purchased in 2021 or later.
  • If your University Windows computer supports the Windows 11 upgrade, you will receive a notification about it on your computer once the upgrade is available for installation. The upgrades will become gradually available for University Windows computers during the spring and summer of 2025.
  • Install the upgrade when you receive a notification of it on your computer. The upgrade may take longer than an hour because the University’s security product for Windows computers will change from WithSecure to Microsoft Defender for Endpoint in the same installation package. You can also postpone the upgrade and install it at a convenient time (e.g. at the end of your workday).

Please note!

  • The Windows 11 operating system cannot be installed on old Windows computers that are no longer covered by the University’s centralised management. These devices must be taken out of use via the University’s IT recycling service, and new computers must be purchased to replace them, if necessary.
  • Due to the end of support for Windows 10 in October 2025, there may supply shortages which impact the availability of computers in late 2025. The delivery of computers may be delayed if purchase requests are not made in time.See the instructions for making purchase requests below.

If you have a Windows desktop computer purchased before 2020 or a Windows laptop purchased before 2021

1. You will receive a notification on the computer screen with instructions on how to take the device out of use when you power it on. The notifications will arrive on University Windows computers gradually during the spring and summer of 2025.

2. If a new computer is purchased for you, read the campus-specific instructions for making purchase requests for new computers and contact the person responsible for device purchases at your campus (e.g. the service coordinator). Submit a device purchase request in accordance with the purchase instructions.

  • NB! If you have an older Windows 10 computer on which the Windows 11 operating system cannot be installed, but your employment at the University ends before October 2025, you do not need to submit a device purchase request for a new computer.

3. Deliver your old Windows computer to the University IT recycling service
