Update 22 January 2021:
According to the university Zoom (Funet Miitti) service distributor CSC, the majority of the issues detected in the service at the beginning of this week have been resolved at this time. Audio and video streaming should work without noticeable delays or interruptions. Service provider NORDUnet and CSC have increased service capacity and improved data traffic processing considerably. Additionally, NORDUnet will increase it’s own server capacity. At this time, the Amazon Web Service server environment will be utilized for load balancing. Service capacity related issues were detected in the university Zoom (Funet Miitti) service during this week (18–21 January) due to a considerable increase in the service’s users. As a result, there have been audio and video streaming issues in some university Zoom meetings. During the past week the service has seen up to 280,000 users in Nordic universities, when the maximum number of users during the end of 2020 was 180,000.

More capacity is on the way

The service provider NORDUnet is currently working together with CSC and other Nordic research and education network organizations in building a new, decentralized solution for the service, where traffic is distributed to different Nordic countries. Four service clusters have already been built for the service, and a fifth cluster will be ready this week in Denmark. Service capacity will be increased further during February 2021. The service capacity that has now been built already exceeds the capacity increase of the Amazon Web Service cloud server environment, which was implemented as a temporary measure.

NORDUnet has identified the issues that caused delays in its server environment. The performance and functionality of the environment has been improved after the heavy traffic during the morning of 19 January and again during the day in 20 January. Additionally, the traffic of some Swedish universities has temporarily been funneled to the Amazon Web Services environment.

Our apologies to university staff and students for the inconvenience caused by these issues. The service provider CSC will inform us on the current situation by 22 January.
