Multi-factor authentication continues in onboarded faculties and units – changes to deployment schedule

28.10.2021 - 09.18

We detected issues with multi-factor phone authentication at the university beginning on 22 October 2021 due to Microsoft’s service disruption. The IT Center suspended multi-factor authentication and its deployment at the university until Microsoft’s resolution for the disruption, see earlier bulletin.

The Microsoft service disruption is still ongoing on Thursday 28.10.2021, but through corrective measures multi-factor authentication has been re-enabled for the faculties and units that were successfully onboarded earlier in 2021. These units include University Services, HR Services, the University Library and the National Library of Finland.

Due to the Microsoft service disruption, the multi-factor authentication deployment schedule has changed as follows:

  • We have postponed the planned multi-factor authentication deployments at the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Pharmacy and the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences. The previous deployment date was Wednesday 20 October 2021. We will inform university staff and students about the new deployment schedule as soon as Microsoft has fully resolved the service disruption.
  • We have postponed the planned multi-factor authentication deployments at the Language Centre, Luomus and the Collegium for Advanced Studies. The previous deployment date was Wednesday 27 October 2021. We will inform staff and students about the new deployment date once Microsoft has fully resolved the service disruption.
  • For other faculties and units, the current schedule is valid for the time being (see the schedule in the IT-Helpdesk instructions). If required, we will update the faculty and unit specific deployment schedule and inform university staff and students about further changes once Microsoft has resolved the situation.
  • Despite the ongoing Microsoft service disruption, you can make taking multi-factor authentication into use easier by defining your authentication methods before your faculty’s/unit’s deployment date. Please do bear in mind that there may be delays in response times at the IT-Helpdesk on the deployment dates due to heavy increases in support requests.

Our deepest apologies on Microsoft’s behalf for the service disruption and our warmest thanks for your patience. Please read the IT Helpdesk instructions for taking multi-factor authentication. Also see the IT-Helpdesk MFA frequently asked questions.
