The PDF reader application Adobe Acrobat Reader will be removed from University Windows computers' default application selection and will no longer be installed automatically on new Windows computers from 1 October 2024 onward. The change is due as Adobe has renewed its application installation processes, and Adobe Acrobat Reader is now installed simultaneously with Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop. This prevents any subsequent installation of the full Adobe Acrobat application.

  • The change does not require any action from you. Adobe Acrobat Reader remains installed on University computers already in use and you can use it to read PDF files.
  • Current browsers (e.g. Edge, Firefox and Chrome) have integrated PDF readers, so you can use your browser to open and read PDF files. Some browser-based PDF readers also allow some editing of PDF files, making them more powerful tools than Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • If you still want to use Adobe Reader on your new University computer, you can install it from Software Center. See Software Center instructions.
  • You can also download the PDF editor PDF-XChange from Software Center. The software includes the processing of PDF files. PDF files can be generated with the PDF-XChange printer that is included in University computers' default application selection. The full retail version of Adobe Acrobat is only necessary for advanced PDF editing.
