The IT Center will introduce a new VPN connection option, AoVPN User Tunnel (Always on VPN), starting from Thursday, 8 December 2022. AoVPN enables centrally maintained staff Windows computers to connect automatically via VPN to the University network.

The AoVPN User Tunnel will be provided as a VPN connection option alongside existing OpenVPN connections for University staff Windows laptops, and you can continue using OpenVPN as needed. Please note that access to the library materials and certain applications still require the OpenVPN uh-vpn-allroute connection.

  • You can access the AoVPN User Tunnel on your University Windows laptop by installing the AoVPN user settings from Software Center. Start using AoVPN with IT Helpdesk instructions.
  • Once you have installed the settings, your University Windows laptop will automatically connect to the University network via a VPN connection every time you turn on your laptop. This way you do not need to separately establish a VPN connection with OpenVPN, and you can access services and systems that are only available in the University network (e.g. group directories).
  • After installation, the AoVPN User Tunnel connection is visible as UH User VPN on your network connections list by clicking the network connection icon on your taskbar.
  • Only traffic to the University of Helsinki is transferred through the AoVPN User Tunnel. Outgoing traffic from the University is routed directly to the destination, which speeds up outgoing connections.
  • Please note! If you need access to Helsinki University Library materials or other material or systems that require all data to pass through the VPN connection, continue using the OpenVPN uh-vpn-allroute connection.

The IT Center began introducing the AoVPN tunnels at the University in 2021, when the AoVPN Device Tunnel, which facilitates the login and maintenance of centrally managed Windows computers, was taken into use. See previous bulletin.
