New application administration system

The administration of applications on the Windows computers covered by the university’s centralised administration will be transferred to a new system during 2018.

The Software Portal previously used by the university will be gradually taken out of use and replaced by the Software Center. For now, both systems will be used side by side.

Changes to the basic application suite

Some changes will also be made to the basic application suite. Basic applications are programs that are pre-installed on all Windows workstations included in the university’s centralised administration. Some applications that have not been used much will not be included in the workstations’ default installations. Instead, users can install them via the Software Center, if necessary.

These applications are, among others:

  • Thunderbird
  • Process Explorer
  • Putty Tray
  • WinSCP

The changes only apply to the Windows workstations that are included in the university’s centralised administration and come into use after 25 January 2018. Programs installed on older workstations will not be uninstalled, and they will continue to be updated normally. In addition, the changes do not apply to Mac or Linux workstations.
