The IT Center will phase out old University Mac computers that are no longer supported and cannot run at least macOS 14 Sonoma or macOS 15 (the new macOS15 will be launched late 2024). The IT Center will centrally prevent the use of old University Mac computers on 31 January 2025 at 4 PM.
The old devices will be removed from use because they are no longer supported by Apple and will not receive important security updates. NB: Due to information and data security, it is very important that you return your old Mac device to the University as soon as possible according to the instructions below!
Please note: If you need a new Mac to replace your old work laptop, we recommend that you make a purchase request as soon as possible. Do also note that device purchases must be completed by the end of November 2024 as expenses cannot be recorded for the calendar year unless the device has been delivered and invoiced. An advance invoice is not sufficient.
If you are using an old University Mac computer:
- You will receive a notification with instructions on how to remove your Mac from use on when you start the computer. You will receive the message on your old Mac during May 2024. Follow the instructions in the notification.
- Check if your Mac is compatible with at least macOS 14 Sonoma on Apple’s website. Also see Apple’s instructions for locating the Mac model name.
- If your computer can be upgraded to at least Sonoma, upgrade the operating system through the University’s Managed Software Center.
- If the computer is not compatible with at least macOS 14 Sonoma, send your old Mac to IT recycling via the University’s internal mail or, if required, ask the IT Center’s on-site support to pick up the old computer.
- See the IT recycling instructions for further information. The hard drives of computers delivered to the recycling service are wiped securely.
- If you actively use the old Mac device for your work and need a replacement, please contact the person responsible for equipment purchases at your campus and read the instructions for purchasing computers.
