Cubbli 16 is based on the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, which will reach its end-of-life in April 2021. All eligible university computers with Cubbli 16 will be upgraded to the latest Ubuntu 20.04 LTS based version, Cubbli 20 during April 2021. The upgrades will begin 6 April and will continue until the end of the month. Cubbli 16 computers will be removed from the university network register on 1 May 2021.

If you have a university Cubbli 16 work computer:

  • Your unit will decide whether 1. a new computer will be purchased for you, 2. the operating system of your computer will be upgraded to Cubbli 20, or 3. your computer will be discarded (e.g. if you have multiple computers). The person responsible for equipment purchases at your unit will tell you what to do.
  • The upgrade will not affect your /home directory or any Sudo user rights you may have, and the files located in your home directory are safe. Any applications that have been installed in system folders with Sudo rights will probably stop working.
  • You are responsible for your data – please transfer your data to a network drive and/or external hard drive prior to the upgrade before we begin the upgrade process of university Cubbli16 computers on 6 April 2021. Also back up your /home directory just in case. For the upgrade to work, your computer must be connected to the university network at your campus. The upgrade process usually takes less than four hours.
  • If your computer will be replaced, await instructions from your unit.
  • Read the instructions for the removal and recycling of IT devices at the University of Helsinki and the instructions for purchasing a new computer.
  • If you have questions concerning the upgrade, please contact: cubbli-upgrade@helsinki.fi
