Majordomo: Mailing Lists’ Basic Use

The email address of Majordomo is majordomo@helsinki.fi

Instructions for mailing list administrators can be found here

If messages sent through mailing lists are being identified incorrectly as junk mail, you can avoid this by adding the list addresses you want to the Safe Recipients list. This will ensure that the mailing list messages will be directed to your inbox.

When you send messages to Majordomo lists, use Plain Text formatting in your messages. Check the settings of the e-mail software you are using to see how it happens.

Nowadays most of the e-mail apps send messages with HTML formatting by default. Majordomo is not compatible with the format and the message fails to be delivered.

Subscribing to and unsubscribing from Majordomo lists

Type the command in the body of the email message.  Majordomo does not process the  subject field  of the message, so there is no need to write anything in it. Majordomo interprets all the text in the message, including any signature, as commands, so please check your email message and remove any unnecessary text before sending it.

To subscribe to and unsubscribe from a mailing list, send an email with the appropriate commands to the Majordomo list server at majordomo@helsinki.fi.

    • Subscribe with the command
    subscribe list-name jane.doe@helsinki.fi

    end
    • Unsubscribe with the command
    unsubscribe list-name jane.doe@helsinki.fi

    end
    • The administrator (owner) of a list can be contacted at
    list-name-owner@helsinki.fi

Please note that in some cases, the list administrator may have chosen to use an additional confirmation for registration. In this case, the subscription to the list must be confirmed separately with a reply message. Follow the instructions provided in the message.

Majordomo is very particular about the address format. The addresses for subscribing and unsubscribing must be identical.

Sending commands to the list server

Actions related to the management of mailing lists, such as subscribing and unsubscribing, are made by sending email commands to the Majordomo list server at majordomo@helsinki.fi.

Write the command in the body of the message. The list server does not process the  subject  field. Majordomo interprets all the text in the message, including any signature, as commands, so please check your email message before sending it.

Majordomo cannot read messages in HTML. In your email settings, check that the message is sent as plain text.
Please note that HTML is the default message format in Outlook and other modern email programs.

Outlook: File > Options > Mail > Compose messages > select Plain Text in the drop-down menu.

OWA: Settings (cog in the top right corner) > Email > Compose and reply > select Plain text in the drop-down menu.

You can send several commands in the same message, one command per row. If the command is longer than one row, you can break it up with a backslash (\), e.g.

    subscribe reallylong-listname \
    evenlonger.emailaddress@helsinki.fi

    end
