SmartCard multi-function printers: Colour printing and other settings in Mac

Unigrafia will renew the University printing service in October–December 2024 – the new service name is Uniprint

Unigrafia and the IT Center in cooperation with the new service provider Ricoh will begin the deployment of the University’s new printing service Uniprint from October 2024. This means moving to a new unified and integrated service that improves your printing experience.

You can find more information about the service on our service website www.uniprint.fi

Print queues to SmartCard multi-function printers are automatically installed on centrally administered Mac computers. Other network printers are installed with a simple wizard (for instructions, see the Detailed help tab).

Note! Colour printing is more expensive than black-and-white printing.

Printing is always subject to a charge for students. You can purchase printing balance in Unigrafia's online shop. In the online shop, you can also see the current printing prices.

Smartcard-PCL or Smartcard-PS?

  • If using a Windows computer, select the Smartcard-PCL driver.
  • On Mac computers, only Smartcard-PS works so you should choose it.

Note! The name of the print server may be different from the one displayed in the images of these instructions. What is most important is to select a Smartcard printer.

How to print with a SmartCard multi-function printer

    1. In the program in which you want to print, select the printing command and then select “SMARTCARD-PS on PINEWOOD1” or “SMARTCARD-PS on SPRUCE1” as the printer. If you cannot see any printers, click on the HY menu in the menu bar and select Managed Software Center > Updates to check for any updates.

    2. Go to the printer equipped with a SmartCard reader, place the ID card on the card reader and follow the instructions displayed on the printer’s screen. The SmartCard devices are marked with a card reader label.

For more instructions, see the Detailed help tab.

    Other network printers

If you are using a network printer other than a SmartCard printer, it must be added as a print queue in the Mac.

    • Click on the HY menu in the menu bar and select HY Install Printers.
    • In the search field, enter the printer’s serial number (found on a red and white sticker on the side of the printer) or the printer’s location, such as Haartmaninkatu 3.

    • Click on the printer’s name and in the right bottom corner, click on Add Printer.

    • You will receive a confirmation that the installation succeeded.

    • Finally, select the default printer among the printers installed on the Mac. In the Apple menu, select System Preferences -> Print & Scan. In the Default Printer menu, select the printer you use the most.

After adjusting the print presets, you can use both colour and double-sided printing if these features are available on the printer.

The settings can be adjusted in the printing window of any program, but we recommend that you use Microsoft Word, as shown in this example. After saving the settings, you can use them in other programs as well.

    Save the settings as follows:

In the example, the user chooses double-sided colour printing. You can also create other settings you need, such as single-sided colour, black-and-white double-sided or landscape printing.

    1. Open the printer settings by selecting File > Print...

    2. A print window is displayed on the screen. Make sure that the Smartcard printer is selected as the printer (the latter part of the name is irrelevant).

    3. Scroll down the window. Find the menu called Printer Options. Select Printer Features.

    4. The Feature Sets window is displayed on the screen. Select Color in the drop-down menu.

    Under Color Mode, select Color.

    5. In the main menu, locate the Double-sided drop-down menu and select On.

    6. In the Presets menu, select Save current settings as preset…

and save, for example, under the name “Colour print, double-sided”. Remember to select All printers to ensure that the settings also work on other printers (those that offer double-sided printing).

NOTE! You can define several presets, such as one-sided colour printing, double-sided black-and-white printing or landscape, by adjusting the aforementioned settings.
