Candour ID identification

These instructions apply only to members of the University community who do not have Finnish online banking credentials or a mobile certificate.

If you have online banking credentials for a Finnish bank or a Finnish mobile certificate, these instructions do not apply to you. In that case, please activate your user account by following the separate instructions.

You can find the Candour ID identification option in the MyAccount service at: https://myaccount.helsinki.fi/.

Identification in the Candour ID service

To activate your University of Helsinki user account without using Suomi.fi identification, identify yourself using the Candour ID service. The Candour ID mobile app is used for the identification.

    • Start the identification process in the MyAccount service at https://myaccount.helsinki.fi/.
    • Select Sign in with Candour ID.
    • Log in using the same email address or phone number you used when applying to the University of Helsinki.
    • Download the Candour ID app to your phone from App Store or Play Store. If you already have the app installed, check that you are using the latest version.
    • Please use your original and valid passport or identity card for the identification. A photograph or copy of your ID document will not be accepted.
      • Accepted forms of ID are a passport (with or without an ICAO chip) and a Finnish or foreign identity card containing an ICAO chip.
    • Make sure that your phone has a working camera.
    • If you are using a passport or identity card with an ICAO chip, your phone must have an NFC reader.
    • Follow the instructions in the Candour ID app. The app will ask you to take a photo of your ID, scan the details from your ID and take a selfie.
    • If the chip cannot be read or your passport does not have an ICAO chip, you can continue using optical recognition as per the app’s instructions.
    • Once the identification is successful, return to your browser and wait to be redirected.
    • You can then continue to create your user account and password in the MyAccount service.

Please note: You have five attempts to complete the identification. If you are unable to identify yourself, follow the instructions provided by the Candour ID app and the identification service.

You can find further instructions on the ‘Detailed instructions’ tab.

    • A valid identity document. Accepted identity documents are:
      • A passport (with or without an ICAO chip)
      • Finnish identity card with an ICAO chip
      • Foreign identity card with an ICAO chip
    • Mobile device

Please note: Make sure your ID is one of the documents listed above and that it is valid.

Use your original, physical identity document when verifying your identity via the Candour ID app. A photograph or copy of your ID document will not be accepted.

You must also be recognisable in the photograph on your ID document. Please bear this in mind, particularly if your ID document was issued a long time ago.

Before you start the identification process, download the Candour ID app onto your phone. If the app is already installed on your phone, make sure it is updated to the latest version.

During the identification process, follow the instructions provided by the Candour ID app. Please note that the identification process may vary slightly depending on your phone model and the ID document you are using.

Checking the version of the Candour ID app:

If you already have the Candour ID app installed on your phone, search for the app in Play Store or App Store. Check whether any updates are available for the app.

If you’re using an Android phone, you can also check the app version as follows: open the Candour ID app, tap the three dots in the top right-hand corner, select ‘About’ (or the equivalent depending on your phone’s language) and you’ll see the version number at the bottom of the page.

    The identification process

During the identification process, follow these steps in the Candour ID app:

    • Take a photo of your passport or identity card. Use the original, physical document. A photograph or copy of your identity document will not be accepted.
    • Scan the details on your passport or identity card.
      • If you are using a passport or identity card with an ICAO chip, scan the chip details and follow the instructions in the app.
      • If your passport does not have an ICAO chip, proceed with optical identification and follow the instructions in the app.
    • If the chip in your passport or identity card cannot be read, proceed with optical identification and follow the instructions in the app.
    • Take a selfie.

The Candour ID app checks that your ID document is valid and that the person in the selfie matches the photo on the ID document. The app will then tell you whether your authentication was successful. Return to your browser and wait until you are redirected.

Please note. You have five attempts to verify your identity. If you encounter any problems with the identification, the Candour ID app will provide further instructions. Use all your attempts if necessary. If you are unable to verify your identity after five attempts, you will be redirected back to the identification service, where you will receive further instructions.

Once you have successfully identified yourself, you can proceed to the MyAccount service to create a user account and password for yourself. Find out more about the MyAccount service in the separate instructions.
