When going aboard

IT Centre recommends that the user rights of students going on exchange programmes should remain valid for the duration of the exchange. Access rights for University of Helsinki staff members going on secondment abroad will also remain valid. Forgotten passwords will not be sent by telephone or email, but must be reset using your online banking credentials or electronic ID card via the MyAccount service.

If you are going abroad, take the University of Helsinki IT Security Test for the term in question in advance (the test for the new term is available from 1 July). Make sure you complete the IT Security Test before the due date. If your user account is locked, the workstation cannot be opened abroad. If the account on your workstation does get locked, contact the IT-Helpdesk to explore the options.

Things to remember before you leave

The quickest way to access your own files and certain university online services whilst abroad is to install the VPN client. Read more about VPN in the separate instructions.

Eduroam is a global roaming organisation for higher education and research institutions, of which the University of Helsinki is a member. This allows you to use the wireless network abroad at institutions that are members of the organisation. On centrally managed computers, it is pre-configured. Read more about Eduroam in the separate instructions.

Well in advance of your trip, you should contact support to ensure you have the necessary applications and that your computer is otherwise in good working order. You can also discuss administrator rights if, for example, you need to install new applications whilst travelling. You can contact support via IT-Helpdesk.

Please remember to bring the necessary cables and peripherals with you.
