Wireless networks at the University of Helsinki

This guide includes the most important instructions related to wireless networks at the University of Helsinki. You can find more help from this instructions site by using, for example, the search. If you cannot solve the problem with the instructions, don’t hesitate to contact the IT Helpdesk.

The University of Helsinki has several wireless networks:

  • HelsinkiUni is a new wireless network for centrally managed university staff Windows laptops.

  • Eduroam is international wireless network for staff, students and members of the eduroam network.

  • HelsinkiUni Guest network is intended for users who do not have university credentials or access to the eduroam network.

Note! The University’s Acceptable Use Policy prohibits the connection of non-centrally managed devices over a wired connection to the University's network (excluding connecting laboratory computers to closed laboratory networks via wired connections).

You may not connect any personal devices purchased by yourself or other devices outside the University’s centralized management (e.g. non-centrally managed devices purchased for special use for the University) to the University network over a wired connection. IT Helpdesk does not process requests for connecting non-centrally managed devices to the University network over a wired connection.

If you need a network connection for your own device at the University campuses, you can use either eduroam or HelsinkiUni Guest to connect your device to the network. The wireless eduroam network also works when you visit higher education institutions in Finland and globally.

HelsinkiUni

A new wireless universal network is available on the University’s centrally managed Windows workstations. No separate login is required. The network will be automatically available when the settings have been installed on the computer.

Please note! The HelsinkiUni network is visible on the list of wireless networks on all devices at university campuses but only works on centrally managed university staff Windows laptops (automatically). This means you cannot connect to the network using your university credentials on e.g. Mac laptops or smartphones.

HelsinkiUni network's coverage is largely the same as that of eduroam, with a few exceptions of areas that are not covered:

  • Biomedicum in Meilahti
  • Oral and Dental Centre in Meilahti
  • Viikki Teacher Training School and Helsinki Normal Lyceum

Eduroam

Eduroam is international wireless network for staff, students and members of the eduroam network. The network can be accessed with the geteduroam application.

ATTENTION! Eduroam requires the username to be entered in the form username@helsinki.fi (e.g. rkeskiva@helsinki.fi). Just the username without a suffix will not work.

You will need to log in again after changing your password! See detailed instructions:

How to connect to eduroam with different equipment:

Download settings from geteduroam.org to your own devices (mobile phones and Windows).

HelsinkiUni Guest visitor network

The guest network is intended for users who do not have university credentials or access to the eduroam network. The network can also be used to install eduroam on your own terminal device.
