Eduroam on Android devices

The University of Helsinki has several wireless networks:

Follow these steps to install eduroam on your Android mobile device.

NB! On devices with Android 11 (and later), login is handled with the geteduroam app, as EduroamCAT is no longer supported in this version. Download geteduroam from the Play Store.

    Quick instructions

    Android 11 and later

    • Install the geteduroam app from the Play Store.
    • Open the program and follow the instructions.
      • Enter your username in the format username@helsinki.fi
        (For example, Raimo Keski-Vääntö would enter his username in the format rkeskiva@helsinki.fi).

    Older Android devices

    • First, install eduroam CAT from the Play Store.
    • Then download the setup package at https://cat.eduroam.org/.  Follow the instructions on the page.

    Android 11 and later (geteduroam)

    The images in these instructions are taken with the OnePlus 7 phone, featuring Android 11. If using other devices, there may be differences in the details, but the general principle remains the same.  

    Install the geteduroam app from the Play Store.

    Open the program and follow the instructions.

    Find your home organisation (University of Helsinki).

    • Visitors from other universities can select their own home organisation if it is part of the eduroam network.

    Search by typing the beginning of your university’s name. Select the correct name on the list

    In these instructions, we explain how to use the option Username and passwordCertificate authentication is slightly easier to use, but as it is still in the pilot phase, we are not yet providing instructions for its use.

    In the next stage, select Username and password authentication. Click OK and tap Next.

    NB! Enter your username in the format username@helsinki.fi. (For example, Raimo Keski-Vääntö would enter his username in the format rkeskiva@helsinki.fi or rkeskiva@ad.helsinki.fi).

    Tap Connect to network.

    This completes the installation, and eduroam is ready to use.

    Older Android devices (eduroam CAT program)

    The images in these instructions are taken with the Huawei P20 phone, featuring Android 9.1.0. If using other devices, there may be differences in the details, but the general principle remains the same.

    • Install eduroam CAT from the Play Store.
    • Select your own organisation from the list, in this case the University of Helsinki.
      • JIf location services are disabled, you must search the list using a search word such as University of Helsinki).

     

    • The site will attempt to identify your device and offer the correct installation package (1).
      • If automatic identification is not successful, you can change the installation package by clicking Choose another installer to download (2).

    You will see a reminder about the eduroam CAT program (if you have not installed it, return to the beginning).

    •  The download will begin. Depending on the phone model, the installation will begin automatically or you will have to manually open the newly downloaded ‘config’ file.
    • The configuration file will then be installed on your phone. Select Install.
    • Next, the installer will confirm whether you want to install the profile. Select Yes.
    • Log in with your eduroam account, which is the university’s username + @helsinki.fi (e.g. rkeskiva@helsinki.fi). After entering your username and password, tap Install.
    • You will then receive confirmation of the installation: Profile installed.
    • The connection will now be automatically established when you are in the eduroam area and have enabled your wlan connection.

    Eduroam network troubleshooting

    Tip from our customer: If you run into trouble with the eduroam installation, select Networks > Forget Settings > Reinstall Profile.
