The password linked to the University’s user account is valid for one year at a time. Of course, you can change your password more often for information security reasons. 

The password reset application is available at www.helsinki.fi/password

NB! University Mac users should use these instructions to change their password (and avoid several problems)

You can see the detailed password requirements in the password reset app www.helsinki.fi/password. Password requirements are not published for security reasons.


Please keep in mind that your password is personal. Even IT support never asks for your personal password!

Notifications about password expiration

You will receive a weekly email notification about your password expiring every Sunday, starting around 1½ months before the password expires. The password expiration message is automatically sent only to the account’s @helsinki.fi address.

Changing your password

We recommend changing your password in the password reset service, as it checks that the password is correctly formatted (e.g. is of the correct length and contains the valid characters).

NB! Mac users can check the settings in the password reset service, but they can also use the Mac password reset tool that checks the suitability of the password.

Note! There has been problems with changing the password with some browsers (mainly Firefox). In case of problems, try clearing the cache or using another browser or the browser's incognito mode. If the problems persist, please contact the IT Helpdesk.

How to change the password for a limited user account

You can change the password of your limited user account by using the password reset application available at www.helsinki.fi/salasana

NB! You will not be notified of the expiration of your limited user account and its password. If you need the user account for a longer period, please make sure it remains active.
  • You can change the password of your limited user account even if your personal identity code is not linked to the account information, as long as the username and password are still valid and you remember them. Log in with your username and password.
  • If the password has expired or you no longer remember it, you can reset it online only if the account information contains a personal identity code. You can log in to the application using a mobile certificate, bank identification or certificate card.
