Changes to OpenVPN connections on university Mac computers beginning 7 May 2021

We are renewing the university's OpenVPN service by offering two new connections, uh-vpn-allroute and uh-vpn-helsinkifi-only. The new OpenVPN connections will first be available for university Macs alongside the old HY-VPN and HU-TUN connections starting on Friday 7 May 2021. Later these connections will also be available for the university's Windows and Cubbli computers; we will inform about the time and date separately. You can use all four connections to establish an OpenVPN connection on your Mac computer covered by the university’s centralised maintenance.

With the reform, we will improve the university's information security, increase the existing VPN capacity even more, and streamline the maintenance and management of computers under the university's centralised maintenance.

  • uh-vpn-helsinkifi-only corresponds to the HY-TUN connection. This is the recommended way to establish a VPN connection, which reduces the communication load on the university network. Only traffic to the University of Helsinki passes through the VPN. Traffic outside the university goes directly to the destination, which speeds up connections outside the university.
  • uh-vpn-allroute corresponds to the HY-VPN connection. All traffic passes through the VPN. Note! Use the uh-vpn-allroute connection for university library materials!
  • With the VPN upgrade, the hy-vpn-allroute connection (formerly HY-VPN connection) will also be available for Macs under the university's centralised maintenance running the Big Sur operating system. The disabled HY-VPN connection was not previously available on the University's Macs with Big Sur due to changes made by Apple and, as a result, technical reasons for the Tunnelblick software.
