The university staff Windows 10 computers must be updated to the latest 1909 version, because support for the previous versions is about to end. You will receive an update notification on your university Windows 10 computer when the update is available. After you have received the update notification, the update will be available in Software Center, should you not initiate it from the notification.
Please install the update well in advance before the deadline shown in the update notification. You can also install the update when working from home without a VPN connection. You will not be able to use the computer during the update and, due to its size, we recommend starting the update at the end of your working day, once you have received the update notification on your Windows 10 computer.
- Start the update at the end of your workday, once you have received the update notification on your computer. Depending on your device, the update will take approximately 60–120 minutes, but it could take even longer. Read Helpdesk’s Windows 10 update instructions.
- Before you start the update, make sure you have saved your work and that the power cable is plugged in.
- There will be different views shown on the screen during the update. The screen will also turn off for a long period – this is to be expected, and the update runs in the background. The update is complete when you see the Windows 10 login view with the basic wallpaper on your screen.
- The Windows 10 1909 version is installed on the university’s computers that are either newly installed or re-installed.
New Windows features:
- Improved information security
- Improved performance
- Graphical changes (e.g. a light user interface theme, new emojis and a slightly renewed Start menu).
- Some features of previous Windows 10 versions have been removed. Please find further information on Microsoft’s website.
