Instant message service Jabber

Jabber is an instant message network. You can use Jabber to join group discussions (rooms) or send private messages to other Jabber users. You can also set new rooms. It is possible to set limited rooms in Jabber and only allow certain users in them. The address of the university's Jabber is chat.helsinki.fi.

Jabber is contacted with a separate client software. Recommended client software:

  • Pidgin (Windows and Linux)
  • Adium (Mac OSX)
  • Xabber (Android)

    Pidgin is available from the Software Center to the university's Windows computers.

    General settings for client software 

    • Server: chat.helsinki.fi
    • Port: 5222 (require encryption)
    • Protocol: XMPP
    • Proxy: chat.helsinki.fi
    • Rooms: rooms.chat.helsinki.fi
